1. Program Overview

The 2-Wheeler EV Service & Repair Workshop is DIYguru's most accessible program — a 5-day, 100% offline, entirely hands-on workshop designed to give you immediately usable skills in electric two-wheeler service and repair. There are no online modules, no pre-reading assignments, and no prior EV experience required. You show up, pick up a multimeter, and start working on electric scooters and e-bikes under the supervision of experienced trainers.

The workshop covers everything a technician needs to service the electric 2-wheelers that are rapidly replacing petrol scooters across India: BLDC and PMSM motor diagnostics (hall sensor testing, winding continuity, phase resistance), battery health assessment (voltage checks, load tests, BMS data reading, safe removal/replacement), controller/inverter troubleshooting (throttle signal, MOSFET health, error code reading), charging system repair (charger testing, MCB/fuse inspection, EVSE basics), hub motor bearing replacement (the most common mechanical service job on e-scooters), brake servicing, and auxiliary systems (ignition switch, horn, anti-theft, lighting).

All practical work is done using DIYguru's proprietary Test Bench (Hardware Lab – 3) and EVSE Kit (Hardware Lab – 2) — purpose-built training hardware developed in collaboration with IIT Delhi's Tadpole Projects and EVi Technologies. These test benches allow you to isolate and test every subsystem of a 2-wheeler EV in a controlled environment before working on complete vehicles.

100K+ Annual Sales Each

Electric two-wheelers are India's EV volume engine — 12.8 lakh units sold in CY2025 across brands like TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, Ather Rizta, Ola S1, and Hero Vida. Five OEMs crossed 1 lakh annual sales each in 2025. Over 1 lakh e-scooters are being sold every single month. Every one of these vehicles will need routine servicing (brake pads, bearings, tyres), battery health checks, motor diagnostics, controller troubleshooting, and charger repairs. The supply of trained EV technicians is nowhere close to meeting this demand. A traditional petrol mechanic who can also service e-scooters will double their customer base overnight.

The Numbers That Matter: An average e-scooter needs its first service at 3,000 km (or 3 months). Hub motor bearings typically need replacement at 15,000–20,000 km. Battery health checks should happen every 6 months. Controller and charger issues account for 60% of e-scooter breakdown complaints. A mechanic who can handle all of this — quickly, safely, and correctly — can charge ₹500–₹2,000 per service visit. With just 3–5 e-scooter services per day, the workshop investment pays back in under a month.

5. Day-by-Day Workshop Schedule

Day 1 — 2W EV Architecture, Safety & Electrical Fundamentals
Morning: Complete walkthrough of an electric 2-wheeler — identify every component: battery pack, BMS, controller/inverter, BLDC/PMSM motor (hub or mid-drive), throttle assembly, display/instrument cluster, charger port, DC-DC converter, wiring harness. Understand how power flows from battery → controller → motor → wheel. Compare with petrol 2-wheeler (what's missing: engine, fuel tank, exhaust, clutch, gearbox).

Afternoon: Electrical safety for 2W EVs: safe power shutdown procedure before any work, understanding 48V–72V DC systems, MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) and fuse locations, safe battery disconnection, identifying live wires. Introduction to DIYguru Test Bench — connect a 2W EV drivetrain on the bench, power it up, and observe motor, controller, and battery behaviour in controlled conditions. Basic multimeter skills: DC voltage, resistance, continuity testing on EV components.
Day 2 — Motor Diagnostics & Hub Motor Servicing
Morning: BLDC motor fundamentals — how brushless DC motors work in e-scooters (3-phase, permanent magnet, electronic commutation). Hall sensor testing: check each of the 3 hall sensors using multimeter (supply voltage, signal output). Phase winding continuity and resistance check (all 3 phases should be equal). Identifying common motor faults: dead hall sensor, shorted winding, bearing noise, reduced torque.

Afternoon: Hub motor bearing replacement — the single most common mechanical repair on e-scooters. Remove rear wheel, extract hub motor, disassemble motor housing, remove old bearings (puller technique), press in new bearings, reassemble, reinstall. PMSM motor awareness (used in premium scooters like Ather). Motor controller interface testing: throttle-to-motor response verification on test bench. Practice on multiple motor units.
Day 3 — Battery Health Assessment & BMS Basics
Morning: Li-ion battery pack in 2W EVs — cell configuration (e.g., 16S for 48V, 20S for 72V), pack voltage ranges, safe handling. Battery health assessment: measure pack voltage (should be within nominal range), individual cell voltage check (via BMS data or external access), visual inspection (swelling, corrosion, connector damage, electrolyte leakage). Load test: observe voltage drop under load to assess internal resistance. BMS indicator lights and error codes — what they mean.

Afternoon: Safe battery removal and replacement procedure — disconnect sequence, handling precautions, connector inspection, reinstallation. Battery charging diagnostics: verify charger output voltage and current, check charge port and cable integrity, MCB inspection. Using EVSE Kit (Hardware Lab – 2) to test charging equipment and understand charger-to-battery communication. Identify common battery complaints: reduced range, slow charging, battery not charging, BMS error lights.
Day 4 — Controller Troubleshooting, Charger Repair & Auxiliary Systems
Morning: Controller/inverter diagnostics — the controller is the "brain" that converts battery DC to motor AC. Check throttle signal (0–5V analog or Hall-effect), verify controller power supply, test MOSFET output to motor phases. Common controller faults: no response (dead controller), intermittent power (loose connector, overheating MOSFET), error codes on display, speed limiting. Charger testing: measure output voltage and current with multimeter, verify charger LED status patterns, test for ground faults.

Afternoon: Auxiliary system troubleshooting: ignition switch (key/push-button), horn circuit, headlight/tail light, turn indicators, anti-theft/GPS system, instrument cluster display. DC-DC converter testing (converts pack voltage to 12V for accessories). Brake servicing on e-scooters: disc brake pad replacement, drum brake adjustment, regenerative braking awareness (electronic, not mechanical — no adjustment needed). Tyre replacement on hub-motor wheels (different from regular wheels due to motor wiring). Complete wiring harness inspection for chafing, loose connectors, water ingress.
Day 5 — Complete Vehicle Service Workflow, Assessment & Certification
Morning: Full vehicle service simulation — each participant performs a complete 2W EV service from start to finish: visual inspection, safety shutdown, battery health check, motor diagnostics (hall sensors, phase resistance), controller verification (throttle, power output), charger test, brake inspection, auxiliary systems check, bearing condition assessment. Document findings in a service checklist format. Practice customer communication: explaining EV service findings in simple language.

Afternoon: Practical assessment: participants receive an e-scooter with a seeded fault (trainer-introduced). Independently diagnose, identify the fault, and propose the repair — within a timed window. Peer review and trainer feedback. Career guidance session: how to add EV service to your existing workshop, pricing strategies, sourcing spare parts, OEM vs. aftermarket components. Advice on starting a dedicated EV service centre. Certificate distribution: DIYguru Certified 2-Wheeler EV Service Technician. Group photo, feedback, and Q&A wrap-up.

10. Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. I'm a regular petrol mechanic with no EV knowledge. Can I join?

Yes — this workshop is designed for exactly you. No prior EV experience is needed. If you know how to hold a spanner and use a multimeter (or want to learn), you qualify. The workshop starts from the basics — what an electric scooter is, how it differs from a petrol scooter, where the components are — and builds up to actual diagnostics and repair by Day 5. Your existing mechanical skills (bearings, brakes, tyres) will transfer directly; you're just adding the electrical/electronic layer.

Q2. Is there any online component?

No. This is 100% offline, 100% hands-on. You come to the COE lab (Delhi or Pune) for 5 consecutive days, and every hour is spent working on real vehicles and test benches. No pre-reading, no online modules, no homework. Just show up and get your hands dirty.

Q3. What tools and equipment do I need to bring?

Nothing. All tools, equipment, test benches, EVSE kits, multimeters, bearing pullers, and safety gear are provided at the COE lab. You just need to come in comfortable work clothes and closed-toe shoes.

Q4. Will I be able to service real e-scooters (Ola, Ather, TVS) after this?

Yes. The workshop covers the fundamental subsystems common to all electric 2-wheelers — BLDC/PMSM motors, lithium-ion battery packs, controllers/inverters, chargers, hub motors, brakes, and auxiliary systems. Whether it's an Ola S1, Ather 450X, TVS iQube, Bajaj Chetak, or any other e-scooter, the underlying technology is the same. After 5 days, you'll know how to diagnose and fix the most common issues on any brand.

Q5. Can I start my own EV repair workshop after this?

Yes — and many graduates do. The Day 5 career guidance session specifically covers how to set up an EV service workshop, what tools to invest in (₹1–3 lakh for a basic setup), how to source spare parts, pricing strategies, and how to attract customers. With 1 lakh+ e-scooters being sold every month in India, the demand for local, accessible EV service is enormous — especially in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities where authorised service centres are scarce.

Q6. How does this compare to the CEVT program?

This workshop is 5 days, ₹6,000 + GST, 100% offline, 2-wheeler focused. The CEVT is 3 months, ₹20,000, online + offline, covers 2W + 3W + 4W EVs with NEAT AICTE & ASDC certification and placement support. Think of this workshop as the fast-start option — you can begin earning from EV service immediately. The CEVT is the comprehensive career program that covers all vehicle types, includes deeper theory, and connects you to DIYguru's 183+ hiring partners. Many people start with this workshop and then upgrade to CEVT.

Q7. Is food/accommodation included?

No — the fee covers training, tools, equipment, and certification only. Participants arrange their own food and accommodation. Both COE locations (Delhi — Sultanpur, MG Road and Pune — ADYPU Lohegaon) are well-connected by metro/bus, and affordable PG/hostel options are available nearby.
